On behalf of the entire Harness Racing Industry we would like to introduce the LEIGH PLUNKETT FOUNDATION, harness racing's very own charity.

Leigh Plunkett began the fourth generation of a highly regarded Tasmanian Harness Racing dynasty. He was a successful trainer, driver, breeder and administrator before his tragic death from Leukemia in 2007.

Leigh was everything the industry personifies and all his work was completed with the utmost of integrity.

One of his final wishes was that his family and friends do whatever they could to assist the Leukaemia Foundation, to continue to provide for others, the support, comfort and care they provided for him while terminally ill and for his family both during and after his passing.

Read more about Leigh's life achievements.

As part of the year’s activities regarding the Leigh Plunkett Foundation we have a driver in each state wearing the Leigh Plunkett Colours from 1 December 2014 through to 31 December 2014. This is to promote the foundation which has two purposes:

  • Raise funds which will be spent helping causes that effect Harness Racing participants including where trainers, drivers or other participants find themselves ill or unable to work.
  • Provide a scholarship to assist a young participant to travel overseas to further their career (last year’s winner was Ellen Tormey).

The drivers participating are:

  • Jason Lee (Victoria)
  • Luke McCarthy (NSW)
  • Narissa McMullen (Queensland)
  • Gareth Rattray (Tasmania)
  • Chris Lewis (WA)
  • Danielle Hill (SA)
